Why Autism?

As more children are being diagnosed with Autism, mainstream teachers are expected to provide neurodiversity affirming supports for students with complex learning needs within mainstream classes. Autistic students often require supports to navigate the social demands of the classroom and playground, cope with change, avoid sensory overload, and achieve their full learning potential.

Who should attend?

Teachers and teacher aides who want to learn and share practical strategies which benefit Autistic students in the classroom and the playground.

Why this workshop?

School curriculum and expectations are often designed to suit neurotypical learning styles, and may impact on Autistic students' engagement and learning. This workshop explores the strengths of Autistic students as well as the common challenges they face.  We will discuss autism strategies that can be effective for the whole class.   Participants are encouraged to make subtle changes to their interaction style to encourage Autistic students to explore their passions, reduce their anxiety and to prevent overwhelm and meltdowns. Participants will practice their skills by responding to scenarios in small groups. Course notes include visual aids and proformas that can be adapted to suit your own students.
